Capabilities

As the saying goes, it isn’t bragging if you can back it up. The HUMMER H1 can do things that no other vehicle in the world can do—like scale 22-inch rock ledges, ford 30 inches of water and climb 60-percent grades. These uncompromised and unrivaled off-roading capabilities allow the H1 legitimately to stake its claim as the ultimate all-terrain vehicle.

“From the beginning, the H1 was designed above all to be capable. Built to military specifications, the HUMVEE spin-off H1 is rugged to the core,” said Michael C. DiGiovanni, HUMMER general manager. “There isn’t another vehicle on the planet that performs like it.”

Power for any occasion
For 2004, the HUMMER H1 is powered by a 6.5L, turbo-diesel V-8 engine that delivers 205 horsepower at 3400 rpm and an impressive 440 lb.-ft. of torque at 1800 rpm. That’s 10 horsepower and 10 lb.-ft. of torque more than 2003, and meets the new federal emissions standards for 2004. The enormous torque is an important element in H1’s ability to crawl out of mud holes, up steep inclines and over rocky terrain.

H1’s powerful diesel is mated to GM’s Hydra-Matic 4L80-E electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission. Over time, this transmission monitors the customer’s driving technique and adjusts for driving style. The New Venture Gear Model 242 transfer case enables the driver to customize the drivetrain configurations to match virtually any terrain. The transfer case adjusts manually from high gear for highway, to high-lock for slippery surfaces, to low-lock for driving off road with maximum power and torque.

No pavement? No problem!
Power is useless without control, and H1 is designed to allow the driver to go almost anywhere with confidence. H1 has a four-wheel, fully independent suspension system and variable-rate heavy-duty coil springs. The front suspension incorporates a large stabilizer bar to improve handling and reduce sway when cornering. In tandem with the wheel and tire assembly, H1’s suspension provides a comfortable ride even on the roughest terrain.

Four-wheel drive is standard on every H1 and features TorqTrac 4 technology. It automatically reduces tire spin on severe terrain or slippery surfaces by applying the brake to the spinning wheel. This allows the differential to redistribute torque to those wheels with traction.

As if that weren’t enough, H1 owners may opt for the Off-Road Adventure Package. This package is the ultimate in off-road equipment and includes front and rear Eaton ELocker locking differentials. Activated instantaneously at the push of a button, the front and rear differentials can be locked for optimum slow-speed capability in climbing over large rocks or long, steep grades.

The Off-Road Adventure Package also includes a 12,000-pound winch kit; 17-inch, 2-piece aluminum wheels with dual beadlocks; and Goodyear Wrangler MT/R tires. Goodyear GSA tires can be substituted for the MT/R tires.

Leaving the civilized world behind
Other SUVs claim the ability to take their owners off the beaten path. Few, however, can truly leave the civilized world behind. By the numbers, the H1 can traverse a 60-percent incline, a 60-percent decline and a 40-percent side slope. It can clear a 16-inch straight ground clearance obstacle and climb a 22-inch vertical step one tire at a time. The truck can also ford 30 inches of water, which is why there are drain plugs in the floorboards.

The following are just a few of the features inherent in every H1 to ensure an off-road adventure second to none:

Dimensions and design
The H1 has the unique combination of a low center of gravity yet a high, 16 inches of ground clearance—almost double that of any other 4×4. A long wheelbase (130 inches) and nearly 72-inch wide track give it the famous HUMMER stance of wheels at the far corners of the truck. The placement of the wheels provides the key to H1’s off-road prowess, an approach angle of 72 degrees and a departure angle of 37.5 with a break-over angle of 35 degrees. On the 17-inch aluminum wheels are 37-inch heavy-duty off-road tires.

Flexible body
The body is made of flexible, lightweight, corrosion-resistant aluminum. The heat-treated aluminum body panels are bonded together with a structural adhesive and riveted—just like an aircraft allowing the body of the vehicle to flex in uneven terrain. This riveted technique is expensive but the flexibility it provides is an important element of the truck’s off-road performance.

Brakes
H1’s four-channel ABS four-wheel power disc brakes are mounted inboard as a component of the axle assembly, making them less vulnerable to damage than conventional wheel-mounted components. By tucking the brakes inboard, H1s can protect the brakes from mud, sand, silt or water during off-road maneuvers.

Geared hubs
Whether on or off road, safety and control are all about traction. That’s why every H1 comes standard with one of the most useful torque delivery systems in the world: the geared hub. In actuality a mini gearbox right at the wheels, the geared hub takes incoming axle speed and further steps it down at a ratio of 1.92:1, effectively delivering twice the amount of torque to each wheel. Combined with the rest of the drivetrain, the geared hub gives the H1 a total gear reduction of 3.33:1.

CTIS
Another signature feature of the H1 is the Central Tire Inflation System (CTIS) with Runflat Tires. CTIS enables H1 owners to adjust tire pressure on the move to adapt to varying terrain. H1 off-roaders have the unique flexibility to drive on highway (32 psi) to a trail and then deflate their tires (22 psi) for maximum off-road performance without stopping the truck. Due to the hard rubber wheel inside the H1 tire, H1’s Runflat Tire System enables drivers to continue driving on a “flat” tire for up to 20 miles at 30 mph—ideal when the nearest service station is not right around the corner.

Frame and rocker panel protection
A welded steel box frame that is bolstered by five heavy-duty cross members, is strategically located on the H1 to absorb the stress of operating in severe terrain at full Gross Vehicle Weight. Additional driveline and rocker panel protection is featured on the truck to protect the vehicle underneath. The 3/16-inch thick T6 aluminum rocker panel and tubular protection help provide confidence that boulder and body damage are less of a concern off road in an H1.

Load up!
Don’t worry about packing light when taking the H1 off road. In fact, a heavy load of up to 4,000 pounds won’t sacrifice an ounce of the truck’s performance on or off road. Built to military hauling specifications, the H1 can accomplish its most extreme off-road tests fully loaded. The truck also is capable of towing over 7,000 pounds.

Turning radius
Tight corners on the trail or the occasional street U-turn are surprisingly simple with H1’s tight 26.5-foot turning radius.

Central venting
A sealed central venting system protects major drivetrain components from contamination. A 1/4-inch diameter hose connected to the vent on each component leads to a central hose connected to the air filter. This equalizes the pressure inside the gearboxes, enabling H1 to operate in up to 30 inches of water, while minimizing the threat of water, sand, silt or mud contamination.

Cooling system
Heavy-duty multiple cooling systems provide the H1 superior cooling capability for engine coolant, engine oil, transmission/transfer case fluid and power steering fluid. Maintaining fluids at the correct operating temperature increases the life of the powertrain components and allows H1 to operate under even the most extreme conditions.

Interior

2004 H1 INTERIOR ACHIEVES A NEW LUXURY PLATEAU

While H1’s exterior is designed to reinforce its utilitarian roots, the new interior for 2004 raises the H1 to a new level of luxury adding beautiful premium materials, ergonomic design and spaciousness to HUMMER’s icon brand.

“Many H1 owners purchase an H1 in lieu of a vacation home or yacht. They expect a vehicle with a high level of refinement. We’re confident the new interior gives H1 a more upscale look and feel,” said Jon Albert, HUMMER interior designer.

From the instrument panel to the cargo area, and from door panel to door panel, H1’s new interior is designed to create a more luxurious, more inviting, more accommodating and more spacious interior.

Rich materials
The interior of the new 2004 H1 is full of rich leathers, durable microfibers and chromed metal to create texture and dimension for the environment.

High-quality, two-toned leather seating welcomes H1 drivers and passengers. The seats are ebony with brown piping and seat inserts. The seat inserts are aniline leather, which feels soft to the touch and wears extremely well.

The same ebony and brown color theme is carried through on the steering wheel, armrests and the door panels, which feature brown leather on the lower half and wrapped ebony on the upper half.

Brushed nickel is integrated around all major switches, and chrome rings around the gauges create an upscale look for the instrument panel. Chrome also appears on the door handles and in the nameplate H1 sparkling on the horn pad.

Even the floor of the new H1 feels luxurious with a Berber textured carpet on the floor and rear cargo areas.

Ergonomics
“In the redesign of the H1 interior, one of our top priorities was the comfort of the passengers and ease of operation for the driver. In an interior space as unique and open as the new H1, ergonomics became the goal,” said Albert.

One of the first tests of ergonomics is in the seats, where the new H1 features a bucket design that provides enhanced support for greater comfort. In cooler temperatures, the seats feature separate heating elements for the seat cushions and seat backs—allowing all four H1 occupants a high level of customization. The seatbacks have also been redesigned to improve forward visibility for rear passengers. For H1 customers who would like a 5th seat, an auxiliary seat in the same two-tone material is available through HUMMER licensed accessories.

The 2004 H1 streamlines the entire instrument panel, moving and enlarging all the major switches and gauges. The speedometer and tachometer sport easier-to-read graphics, jewel-like accents and a larger size for driver comfort. The driver will also find easier access to the ELockers and Central Tire Inflation System switches when off-roading.

The addition of storage bins above the visors allows H1 owners to store a host of items, from flashlights to the owner’s manual.

Since no on- or off-road adventure is complete without music, the radio and CD player have been combined into one unit making it simpler to select your favorite tunes.

H1’s new interior provides each passenger an individual cockpit with personalized heating and cooling controls, cupholders, power window and locks. The personalization extends to the radio with headphone jacks that allow the rear passengers to choose their own musical selections.

Even the horn on the H1 gets a more ergonomic location, now found in the traditional center of the steering wheel.

The new H1 features a greater level of sound-deadening insulation, improving interior sound levels by two linear decibels. The sprayed insulation on the inside and outside of the vehicle during the manufacturing process, coupled with the improved powertrain and a soft-to-the-touch headliner, provide a cabin environment that is perceptibly quieter to the human ear.

Spaciousness
“The H1 was already one of the most spacious vehicles around. For 2004, we’ve given H1 an even higher level of airiness and increased outward visibility, thanks to new designs for the overhead console and the center console,” Albert added.

The integrated six-disc CD changer replaces the 12-disc changer, resulting in a cleaner, sleeker design for the upper area of the center console, while also providing a more integrated look for the glove box.

Redesigning the center console also resulted in a greater space and visibility for the rear passengers, with auxiliary controls for audio and HVAC in a lower profile area creating a more open feel from back to front.

“A lot of thought went into redesigning the vehicle’s interior to make it even more accommodating for all passengers,” Albert added.

While the 2004 Hummer H1 returns a higher level of luxury, it doesn’t forget its military roots, which are reflected in the gauges—revised for this model year to display green backlighting and black faces. That’s just another reminder of its HUMVEE heritage.

Also new for 2004 H1 models is the availability of a Delphi integrated navigation radio with full map navigation and a CD-ROM/audio player, and a variety of accessories enabling H1 owners to personalize their vehicle to their specific needs.

2004 Hummer H1

Refined Interior
Visually, the most dramatic improvement for 2004 is the new interior, raising H1 to a more refined, more upscale plateau.

“Although H1 still has all of the capabilities that made it a huge hit with our service men and women, it’s really a new kind of luxury vehicle. In fact, many H1 owners purchase this vehicle in lieu of an exotic vacation or home addition. As such, we felt it was imperative to raise the level of the vehicle’s refinement—bringing it more in line with today’s luxury vehicles,” said Jon Albert, HUMMER interior designer.

A higher level of refinement can be found from the instrument panel to the cargo area, and from door panel to door panel. The result is a more luxurious, more inviting, more accommodating and more spacious interior.

New, high-quality leather seats that feature a more pronounced bucket design for enhanced support and greater comfort and new seatbacks that enhance forward visibility for rear passengers are just the beginning of H1’s new interior improvements.

“The aniline leather on the seat inserts, the new color themes, all of H1’s standard features—as well as H1’s interior roominess—result in a vehicle that has all the comforts of an upscale home,” Albert added.

That interior roominess is actually enhanced for 2004, thanks to redesigned overhead and center consoles.

“We looked at the interior design of the previous H1 and realized that we could repackage some elements to create a vehicle that feels even larger on the inside,” Albert explained. “For example, by using an integrated six-disc CD changer in place of the 12-disc changer, we were able to give the upper area of the center console a cleaner, sleeker look, while also providing a more integrated look for the glove box.”

A quieter cabin
Also improved for 2004 are H1’s interior noise levels, thanks to additional insulation and a refined powertrain. The result is a cabin environment that is perceptibly quieter to the human ear.

More power and plenty of poise
There’s also more power for 2004, thanks to a retuning of the 6.5L, turbo-diesel V-8 engine. As a result of the improvement, the 6500 now delivers 205 horsepower at 3400 rpm and an impressive 440 lb.-ft. of torque at 1800 rpm. That’s 10 horsepower and 10 lb.-ft. of torque more than the 2003 powerplant.

Yet enhanced performance is only part of the engine’s story. The retuning also enables the 6500 to meet the more stringent emission requirements starting in 2004. It’s mated to GM’s Hydra-Matic 4L80-E electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission. Over time, this transmission monitors the customer’s driving technique and adjusts for driving style.

Providing sure stops are H1’s four-channel ABS four-wheel power disc brakes. To help prevent damage to these—especially during off-road excursions—the brakes are mounted inboard as a component of the axle assembly, rather than mounted to the wheel components.

Four-wheel drive is standard on every H1 and features TorqTrac 4 technology, automatically reducing tire spin on severe terrain or slippery surfaces by applying the brake to the spinning wheel. An Off-Road Adventure Package is available and includes front and rear Eaton ELocker locking differentials for optimum slow-speed capability in climbing over large rocks or long, steep grades.

For 2004, H1 continues to offer those features that make it a standout among SUVs, including a Central Tire Inflation System (CTIS) and a Runflat Tire System. CTIS enables H1 owners to adjust tire pressure on the move to adapt to varying terrain, while the Runflat Tire System enables drivers to continue driving on a deflated tire for up to 20 miles at 30 mph.

Further adding to peace of mind while off road are H1’s low center of gravity, long wheelbase (130 inches) and nearly 72-inch track width. The result is a vehicle that is extremely stable—on and off road.

It’s off road, however, that H1 really shines. That’s because the H1 was engineered to tackle the most difficult conditions—from blazing tropic heat to the most frigid arctic, and from the dry and dusty atmosphere of a desert to the muggy tropics.

The secret behind HUMMER H1’s awesome capability is in its DNA. It was originally engineered to meet the rigorous demands of the U.S. armed forces that needed a vehicle with power, agility and durability like nothing in existence. Strip away some refinements and creature comforts, and the HUMMER H1 is still the “HUMVEE” trusted and respected by our military.

Where does one start in describing H1’s off-road superiority? How about its 16-inch vertical ground clearance—almost double that of any other 4×4. Let’s not overlook H1’s dramatic approach and departure angles of 72 degrees and 37.5 degrees, respectively, or the 17-inch aluminum wheels shod with 37-inch tires. You may never encounter it, but there’s a degree of comfort in knowing this vehicle can ford a 30-inch deep body of water.

“The powertrain refinement, the quieter cabin, as well as the luxurious new interior are a great example of what AM General and General Motors can accomplish together,” DiGiovanni said. “These are just the latest concrete examples of the benefits derived from maximizing the strengths of both companies.”
