Styrofoam Hummer

Photo Details
Poster: GMHummerAdmin  (see this users gallery)

Andrew Junge, the latest artist-in-residence at San Francisco's garbage dump, puts the finishing touches on the Hummer he sculpted out of Styrofoam he scavenged at the trash disposal site. The Hummer and other waste- based works by Junge are on display 5 to 9 p.m. today and 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday in a free open-studios exhibition at the dump at 503 Tunnel Ave., near Candlestick Point.

Norcal Waste Systems, which owns the dump and recycling plant, has sponsored an artist-in-residence program since 1990. Paid artists have three- month residencies that include 24-hour access to the facility, where tons of trash end up each week before being sorted and sent to permanent landfills. The artists have the opportunity to show their creations in schools and galleries
