Arnold Schwarzenegger Gives Up His HUMMER's
Arnold Schwarzenegger has terminated his beloved fleet of gas guzzling Hummer cars in a bid to save the planet.
The muscleman-turned-Governor of California was the first person to own one of the vehicles in 1992 after he persuaded the manufacturer to start making them for non-Army uses.
But now Arnie, 59, has got rid of his sports-utility vehicles — worth $950,000 — as he makes an effort to go green.
Former US Vice President Al Gore — who has become a figurehead for the environmental movement after the release of his global warming documentary An Inconvenient Truth — confirmed the news yesterday.
He revealed: "Arnie has given up his Hummers."
The cars have become the target of environmental campaigners because they emit three times more carbon dioxide than a regular car.
The tank-like cars average around 10 miles to the gallon.
Hummer sales boomed amid the economic confidence of the late 1990s.
But they saw a drop in orders in the last two years, partly because of fuel costs, and partly because of negative press about environmental damage.
It comes after the State of California announced it would sue carmakers Toyota, Nissan, Ford, Honda, Chrysler and General Motors over greenhouse gas emissions.
Earlier this week, Virgin tycoon Sir Richard Branson pledged $3 billion towards research into new renewable technologies.
